Position: Laboratory Supervisor, Virology & Immunology Lab
Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences

The Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Laboratory Supervisor within the Virology and Immunology Lab. This position is pivotal in overseeing, coordinating, and ensuring the efficient daily functioning of the diagnostic laboratory units focused on virology and immunology. While operating under the general guidance of the faculty Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Supervisor is empowered to make autonomous decisions regarding laboratory management and operations.



Key Responsibilities:

Administrative and Supervisory Duties:

  • Review and authorize laboratory test charges within the hospital billing system, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor and summarize monthly financial reports and test volume data.
  • Collaborate with the Laboratory Director to assess and update laboratory test pricing on an annual basis.
  • Develop and manage staff schedules, ensuring optimal coverage and resource allocation.
  • Oversee the use of laboratory space and equipment, facilitating effective operations for staff and researchers.
  • Approve staff leave requests and manage attendance records.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for laboratory personnel.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for new laboratory staff.
  • Assist in the formulation and approval of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Implement and maintain quality assurance protocols and safety regulations.
  • Report workplace incidents and ensure compliance with institutional safety measures.
  • Manage laboratory inventory and approve supply requisitions.
  • Engage in departmental meetings and contribute to committee work as needed.

Operational and Technical Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight and technical guidance across all laboratory functions, assigning tasks and monitoring progress.
  • Prepare and accession specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Supervise the entry of patient data into electronic medical records.
  • Conduct viral isolation and identification procedures, including various diagnostic tests.
  • Ensure adherence to quality control measures and troubleshoot any operational issues.
  • Engage in emergency preparedness and strategic planning for laboratory operations.
  • Collaborate with faculty on new equipment acquisitions and test development.
  • Advise researchers on test availability and requirements for sample submission.
  • Participate in proficiency testing for laboratory accreditation.
  • Analyze scientific data to identify and resolve issues related to diagnostic testing.

Teaching and Training Responsibilities:

  • Train laboratory staff on operational procedures and best practices.
  • Assist in the development of educational content for veterinary students.
  • Consult with clients regarding specimen collection and result interpretation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, microbiology, medical technology, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in a clinical laboratory environment or equivalent supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in laboratory management or supervisory roles.
  • Advanced degrees or relevant coursework in related fields.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and regulatory compliance for diagnostic testing.
