Laboratory Supervisor, Virology & Immunology Lab
College of Veterinary Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Laboratory Supervisor within the Virology and Immunology Lab, part of the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences Department. This position entails overseeing, coordinating, and ensuring the smooth operation of the diagnostic laboratory units focused on virology and immunology. The Laboratory Supervisor operates under the general guidance of the faculty Laboratory Director but is empowered to make independent decisions regarding laboratory management and operations.



Key Responsibilities:

Supervisory and Administrative Duties:

  • Manage and authorize laboratory test charges in the hospital billing system, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor and compile monthly financial reports and test count statistics.
  • Collaborate with the Laboratory Director to review and adjust laboratory test pricing as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain staff duty schedules and oversee resource allocation.
  • Approve leave requests and manage time records for laboratory personnel.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for laboratory staff and participate in recruitment processes.
  • Establish and review laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance.
  • Implement quality assurance measures and maintain training records for laboratory personnel.
  • Report workplace incidents and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
  • Oversee inventory management and approve supply requisitions.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to institutional committees as needed.

Operational and Technical Functions:

  • Provide technical supervision across all laboratory areas, assigning tasks and reviewing work for accuracy.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure proper data entry into electronic medical records.
  • Conduct viral isolation and identification procedures, including various diagnostic tests.
  • Ensure adherence to quality control procedures and troubleshoot any operational issues.
  • Engage in emergency preparedness and strategic planning for laboratory operations.
  • Assist in the acquisition of new equipment and the development of new tests.
  • Advise researchers on testing options and requirements.
  • Participate in proficiency testing for accreditation purposes.

Teaching and Training Responsibilities:

  • Train laboratory staff on operational procedures and best practices.
  • Develop educational content and assist in teaching veterinary students.
  • Consult with internal and external clients regarding specimen collection and results interpretation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, microbiology, medical technology, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in a clinical laboratory environment or equivalent supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in laboratory management or supervisory roles.
  • Relevant postgraduate education or specialized training.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance and regulatory compliance in diagnostic testing.
