Position Overview

Relocation assistance is available for this role.

Our East Syracuse, NY laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the GCMS team. The Laboratory Supervisor will manage daily operations within their department, collaborating with Team Leads to optimize sample processing and ensure that turnaround times are consistently met while upholding data quality that aligns with industry standards. This role is pivotal in fostering a safe working culture throughout the laboratory.


Key Responsibilities
  • Directs workflow within the department to meet established turnaround times.
  • Collaborates with Team Leads to effectively manage personnel and equipment resources, maximizing sample throughput and achieving production goals.
  • Utilizes LIMS to ensure proper sample processing and updates sample statuses as necessary.
  • Employs technical expertise to identify potential issues with processed samples.
  • Implements best practices in the laboratory to enhance operational efficiency and maintain high data quality standards.
  • Exhibits strong leadership through effective planning, delegation, and empowerment of team members, while managing performance daily.
  • Ensures adequate staffing levels in relation to sample volumes and that personnel are thoroughly trained for their roles.
  • Partners with the Laboratory Manager to oversee the recruitment and training of qualified laboratory staff.
  • Facilitates the onboarding of new analysts to ensure they become effective contributors to the team.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels of laboratory supplies based on current workload demands.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and ensures team compliance with safety regulations.
  • Proactively addresses safety concerns as they arise to minimize risks and promote safe practices.
  • Champions a strong culture of safety and maintains a secure working environment.
  • Keeps supervisory and management teams informed of any emerging issues.
  • Provides relevant information to management regarding instrumentation, production, and personnel matters.
  • Performs additional duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Chemistry-related field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in Analytical Chemistry Laboratories or equivalent education and experience (Required).
  • Experience with GCMS is essential (Required).
  • Familiarity with EPA TO15, TO17, and 325 Methods is highly preferred.
  • Experience with thermal desorption tubes is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of 6L and 1L canister sampling and analysis is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in mass spectrometry is required.
  • A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in English is required.
  • Understanding of environmental testing protocols, regulations, and certifications relevant to the department is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for this position.
  • Solid understanding of processes and workflows is required.
  • Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions and address problems involving multiple variables is necessary.
  • Capability to read and interpret documents such as SOPs, safety guidelines, and operational manuals is required.
  • Proficient in writing routine reports and communicating effectively with groups is required.
  • Demonstrates integrity and respect towards others and company principles.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to listen actively and provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong time management skills, capable of balancing multiple projects with varying deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) is required.
  • Experience with LIMS is preferred.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000, depending on experience. This position is not eligible for overtime.

Additionally, the compensation package includes the following benefits:

  • Participation in the Company's benefit programs starting from the first of the month following your hire date.
  • Immediate eligibility for the Company's 401K Retirement Plan.
  • Paid vacation, including:
    • Four (4) floating holidays annually.
    • Seven (7) company-observed holidays paid.
    • Sick time accrual.
