Stanford CA, United States Stanford University Full time

Position Overview:
The potential of human embryonic stem cells to revolutionize regenerative medicine remains largely untapped due to the complexities involved in effectively differentiating these cells into specialized types.

To tackle this challenge, the Loh Laboratory at Stanford University is looking for a Research Scientist in Life Sciences to engage in intricate functions and activities related to specific research initiatives, while independently managing a segment of the research projects.

The Loh Laboratory utilizes insights from developmental biology to enhance the precision of embryonic stem cell differentiation, as evidenced by their recent publications in esteemed journals.

The selected candidate will co-lead a project focused on the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells, which will involve tasks such as cell culture, differentiation protocols, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, immunostaining, and transplantation studies in animal models.

This role demands a high degree of independence in strategizing project objectives, designing experiments, and interpreting results, all under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.

Additionally, this individual will serve as the primary contact for this inherently collaborative project, which involves partnerships with multiple other laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently conduct various aspects of the research projects.
  • Provide recommendations on experimental designs and research directions to the principal investigator.
  • Execute complex laboratory experiments to collect data for significant research initiatives.
  • Analyze and interpret results, often in the absence of established guidelines, and refine existing protocols as necessary.
  • Develop new research methodologies when existing protocols are insufficient or require adaptation.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary collaborations across different faculties.
  • Conduct ongoing literature reviews to stay updated with new methodologies and relevant research.
  • Contribute significantly to the preparation of research papers, particularly in the results section, and assist in disseminating findings.
  • Present ongoing research at academic conferences and to colleagues.
  • Manage the laboratory's supply and equipment budget under the supervision of the principal investigator.
  • Collaborate with the health and safety department to ensure laboratory compliance with regulations.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, providing guidance on techniques and project work.
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including maintenance and inventory management.
  • Assist with the procurement of laboratory equipment as required.

Desired Qualifications:
A Master's degree in Biological Sciences is preferred, along with experience in culturing and differentiating human pluripotent stem cells, RNA isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and immunostaining. Familiarity with handling and transplanting mice is also beneficial.

Education & Experience (Required):
A Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field with two years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in a related scientific discipline.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):
A comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, strong analytical skills, and the ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes are essential. Proficiency in computer applications and the ability to work under deadlines with minimal supervision are also required.

Physical Requirements:
The role involves frequent standing, walking, and performing tasks that require fine manipulation. The ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 40 pounds is necessary, along with the capacity to work in various physical conditions.

Working Conditions:
May involve exposure to blood-borne pathogens and environments where animals are utilized for research. Personal protective equipment will be required, and the position may necessitate extended hours based on research demands.

Commitment to Safety:
Demonstrates a commitment to personal responsibility and values safety, actively communicating safety concerns and promoting safe practices.

Stanford University is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
