The Mullally Lab within the Stanford Division of Hematology at Stanford University is in search of a Life Science Research Professional 2 to engage in intricate functions and activities related to specified research initiatives, and to autonomously manage a segment of the research project(s).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute a segment of the research project(s). Provide insights on experimental frameworks and/or research trajectories to the principal investigator.
  • Conduct sophisticated laboratory experiments to collect data for a significant research project.
    Analyze and interpret results, often in scenarios with limited guidelines, and adjust existing methodologies and protocols as necessary.
  • Formulate new research protocols when appropriate protocols are absent in the literature or when alterations or adaptations of standard procedures are required.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary collaborations across various faculties or schools.
  • Continuously review relevant literature to stay updated with new methodologies and associated research; apply findings to ongoing research and the development of new protocols.
  • Contribute significantly to the drafting of papers for publication, particularly in the results section, and to the dissemination of findings. Present ongoing research to peers and/or at academic conferences.
  • Oversee (formally or informally) staff or students as necessary, providing guidance on techniques and consultation on project work. Act as a technical resource for other research personnel.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in hematology research, particularly concerning blood cancers.

Education & Experience (Required):

  • Required: MD or Ph.D. in biomedical life sciences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):

  • Thorough understanding of scientific principles.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain meticulous records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Capacity to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to accurately complete detailed tasks.
  • Proficient in laboratory-based research, including molecular and cellular biology techniques.
  • Strong skills in flow cytometry, functional genomics, and proficiency with mouse models.
  • High competency in data analysis, developing demonstrable research outcomes, and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
  • High degree of scientific creativity, productivity, and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to supervise and train junior colleagues, students, and research technicians.
  • Ability to collaborate and work closely with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to generate and contribute to research grant applications; capability to write and submit manuscripts for publication.
  • Ability to think independently and develop novel hypotheses for testing.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping lightly, using fine manipulation, grasping forcefully, performing desk-based computer tasks, using telephone, writing by hand, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and working above shoulder level, sorting, and filing paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climbing, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, chopping, mixing, or operating hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctable vision to perform job duties.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

Working Conditions:

  • May require working in close proximity to blood-borne pathogens.
  • May require work in an environment where animals are utilized for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times necessitate working with or being in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

Compensation: The expected pay range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
