About the Department: The Department of Pathology, a cornerstone of the Stanford School of Medicine, stands as one of the premier departments in the nation. Our distinguished faculty includes emerging leaders and esteemed physicians and scientists, such as a Nobel laureate and members of the National Academy.

Mission: Our commitment lies in enhancing the capacity to diagnose, treat, and comprehend the origins and manifestations of human diseases, while providing care for individuals at risk of developing such conditions.

Research Autopsy Center: The Research Autopsy Center at Stanford procures unique organs and tissues postmortem for immediate allocation to researchers focusing on cancer and systemic diseases, in addition to establishing a biobank program. Collaborating with over 50 research groups, the center supplies tissues utilized for cell line growth, organoid development, genetic sequencing, and various research investigations.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist with specimens during research autopsies, including participation on nights and weekends.
  • Contribute to study development utilizing data and tissues acquired at autopsy, leading to publications and presentations at national conferences.
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments under the guidance of the Principal Investigator or a senior research scientist.
  • Independently conduct complex experiments to gather data for significant research projects.
  • Develop new research protocols where existing literature lacks appropriate descriptions or requires modifications.
  • Support lab research projects, including single-cell transcriptome profiling of human brain tissue from patients with neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental results, suggesting modifications to procedures in collaboration with senior researchers.
  • Maintain ongoing literature reviews to stay updated with new procedures and research developments.
  • Oversee supply and equipment budgets under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or business manager.
  • Supervise staff or students as necessary, providing guidance on techniques and project work.
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Manage lab stock, chemical inventory, and safety records, while providing general lab support.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field with two years of pertinent work experience; or a Master's degree in a related scientific discipline. A comprehensive understanding of scientific principles is essential, along with general computer skills and the ability to swiftly learn and master scientific applications.

Physical Requirements: The role necessitates frequent standing, walking, and performing desk-based tasks, as well as the ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 40 pounds. Occasional sitting, kneeling, and reaching may also be required.

Work Environment: The position may involve working in environments where animals are utilized for teaching and research, and may require the use of personal protective equipment.
