Job Overview

The Project Engineer Level IV plays a crucial role in orchestrating collaborative efforts among various engineering disciplines, subcontractors, and assigned personnel. This position is responsible for formulating project timelines, evaluating proposed modifications, devising technical solutions, and accurately estimating the resources and time required for new initiatives and alterations. The Project Engineer will produce high-level assessments of effort and project timelines, progressively refining these details prior to project authorization and execution. Once projects receive the green light, the Project Engineer will ensure that tasks are integrated into the Engineering Department's comprehensive schedule, regularly generating status reports and driving projects towards successful completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed, task-oriented plans for executing large-scale projects (over 1000 hours) with clearly defined Estimated Completion Dates (ECDs) for each task, ensuring integration into the Engineering Department's schedule.
  • Provide the Project Engineering Manager or Director of Engineering with necessary scheduling information for all assigned tasks, including budgeted hours and required completion dates.
  • Maintain active tracking of these tasks, reporting daily on any deviations from the plan or necessary adjustments.
  • Generate engineering estimates for task durations and budgets (hours and materials).
  • Act as the engineering representative in preparing responses to commercial or government Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Notify supervisors and relevant managers of any delays or complications in project execution, proposing potential solutions to recover schedule and budget.
  • Facilitate meetings as necessary to resolve obstacles related to assigned or associated projects, involving participants from various shipyard functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • The Project Engineer Level IV may have supervisory duties and project leadership responsibilities, indirectly overseeing assigned engineering resources to ensure project completion. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, evaluating performance, and providing insights for employee assessments.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in an engineering role.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CONFIDENTIAL security clearance.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and interpret various technical documents and regulations.
  • Strong presentation skills to effectively communicate with senior management and departmental leaders.
  • Practical problem-solving skills in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and teamwork.

Education Requirements
  • A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an ABET-accredited institution is required (advanced degree preferred) along with at least 6 years of relevant Project Engineering or Project Management experience.

Working Conditions

This position involves both office and fieldwork, including:
  • Assigned office space for daily tasks with occasional ship visits as needed.
  • Exposure to airborne dust in the workplace.
  • Potential for working in confined spaces and at heights when in the field.

Physical Requirements

This role requires light physical activity, including:
  • Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
  • Frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Constant standing and repetitive movements of arms and hands.
