Job Overview

The Project Engineer Level IV plays a crucial role in orchestrating collaborative efforts across various engineering disciplines, subcontractors, and other designated personnel. This position involves the development of project timelines, assessment of proposed modifications, creation of technical solutions, and accurate estimation of the time and resources required for new initiatives and adjustments. The Project Engineer is tasked with generating preliminary estimates of effort and project timelines, refining these estimates as projects progress toward authorization and execution.

Once projects receive the green light for implementation, the Project Engineer is responsible for ensuring that tasks are integrated into the Engineering Department's comprehensive schedule, consistently producing status reports on implementation progress, and steering projects toward successful outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate detailed, task-oriented plans for executing large-scale projects (exceeding 1000 hours) with clearly defined Estimated Completion Dates (ECDs) for each task. Ensure these plans are incorporated into the Engineering Department's integrated schedule.
  • Provide the Project Engineering Manager or Director of Engineering with necessary scheduling for all assigned tasks, including budgeted hours and required completion dates.
  • Maintain active tracking of tasks, reporting daily on any deviations from the plan or changes needed in timelines.
  • Develop engineering estimates for durations and budgets (hours and materials) for specific tasks or projects.
  • Act as the engineering representative in preparing responses to commercial or governmental Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Notify supervisors and relevant managers of any delays or complications in project execution, proposing potential solutions to recover schedule and budget.
  • Facilitate meetings as needed to resolve obstacles related to assigned or associated projects, involving participants from various shipyard functions such as Program Management, Production, Project Engineering, and individual engineers.
Supervisory Duties
  • As a Project Engineer Level IV, there will be supervisory responsibilities assigned, including indirect supervision of matrixed engineering resources responsible for project completion. This includes planning, assigning, and directing work, as well as evaluating performance and providing insights for end-of-year assessments.
Reporting Structure
  • This position reports to the Manager of Project Engineering or the Director of Engineering.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in an engineering role.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CONFIDENTIAL security clearance.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents, including business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Effectively present information and respond to inquiries from senior management and other department leaders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in planning and executing projects with teams of 20 or more.
  • Strong understanding of the engineering and design processes for marine vessels.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements in the shipbuilding industry.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and designs.
Education Requirements
  • A minimum of a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an ABET-accredited institution, with an advanced degree preferred and at least 6 years of relevant Project Engineering or Project Management experience.
Work Environment
  • This role involves both office and fieldwork, including occasional ship visits.
  • Exposure to airborne dust and potential confined spaces when in the field.
Physical Requirements
  • Considered light physical work, with occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds and frequent standing, climbing, and reaching.
