Job Overview

The role of a Project Engineer Level III encompasses a range of responsibilities aimed at facilitating effective coordination among various engineering disciplines, subcontractors, and assigned personnel. This position involves the development of project timelines, assessment of proposed modifications, formulation of technical solutions, and accurate estimation of the time and resources required for new projects and changes. The Project Engineer is tasked with generating high-level estimates of effort and project duration, progressively refining these details prior to project authorization and execution. Once projects are approved, the Project Engineer ensures that tasks are integrated into the Engineering Department's comprehensive schedule, regularly producing status reports and driving projects towards successful completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate detailed, task-oriented plans for executing large-scale projects, ensuring that project timelines are incorporated into the Engineering Department's integrated schedule.
  • Generate engineering estimates for durations and budgets associated with specific tasks or projects.
  • Act as the engineering representative in preparing responses to commercial or governmental Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Communicate with supervisors and relevant managers regarding any delays or complications in project execution, proposing viable solutions to recover schedule and budget.
  • Facilitate meetings as necessary to resolve obstacles related to assigned or interconnected projects, involving a diverse range of participants across shipyard functions.
  • Lead meetings supported by internal engineering teams and external clients to provide project status updates and assist in achieving project completion.
Supervisory Duties
  • This position may involve supervisory responsibilities and project leadership, indirectly overseeing assigned engineering resources to ensure project completion. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, as well as evaluating performance and providing insights for end-of-year assessments.
  • May also include mentorship responsibilities for junior staff members.
Reporting Structure
  • This position reports directly to the Manager of Project Engineering.
Qualifications

Required
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in an engineering role.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a CONFIDENTIAL security clearance.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents, including business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Proficient in presenting information and responding to inquiries from senior management and departmental leaders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Desired
  • Extensive experience in planning and executing projects involving teams of 20 or more individuals.
  • In-depth understanding of the engineering and design processes related to marine vessels.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements pertinent to the shipbuilding industry.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, including the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Educational Background
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an ABET-accredited institution is required, with an advanced degree preferred.

Working Environment

This position involves both office and fieldwork, characterized by:
  • Assigned office space for daily tasks, with occasional ship visits as required.
  • Potential exposure to airborne dust in the workplace.
  • Fieldwork may involve working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position include:
  • Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
  • Frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and reaching.
  • Constant standing and repetitive movements of arms and hands.
  • Sitting with back support.
