Job Overview
The Project Engineer Level III plays a crucial role in orchestrating collaborative efforts across various engineering disciplines, subcontractors, and other designated personnel. This position is tasked with formulating project timelines, assessing proposed modifications, crafting technical solutions, and accurately estimating the resources and time required for new initiatives and alterations. The Project Engineer is responsible for producing preliminary estimates of effort and project timelines, progressively refining these details prior to project approval and execution. Once projects receive authorization, the Project Engineer ensures that tasks are integrated into the Engineering Department's comprehensive schedule, regularly generates status reports, and drives projects toward successful outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed, task-oriented plans for executing large-scale projects (exceeding 1000 hours) with clearly defined Estimated Completion Dates (ECDs) for each task, ensuring alignment with the Engineering Department's integrated schedule.
- Create engineering estimates for durations and budgets (hours and materials) for specific tasks or projects.
- Serve as the engineering representative in preparing responses to commercial or governmental Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
- Inform supervisors and relevant managers of any delays or complications in project execution, proposing viable solutions to recover schedule and budget.
- Facilitate meetings as necessary to resolve obstacles related to assigned or interconnected projects, engaging a diverse group of participants across various shipyard functions.
- Lead meetings established by internal engineering teams and external clients to provide updates and support project completion.
- The Project Engineer Level III may have supervisory responsibilities and project leadership duties, indirectly overseeing assigned engineering resources to ensure project completion. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; contributing to employee assessments; supporting the hiring process; and addressing complaints and resolving issues.
- May also have leadership responsibilities over team members and mentorship duties for junior staff.
- This position reports to the Manager of Project Engineering.
Required
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in an engineering role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a CONFIDENTIAL security clearance.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Effectively present information and respond to inquiries from senior management and other department leaders.
- Apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, verbal, or diagrammatic form.
- Strong familiarity with FORAN or similar software such as AVEVA, NUPAS CADMATIC, Ship Constructor, or comparable CAD/CAM software.
- Capable of solving practical problems and addressing various variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating attention to detail and teamwork.
- Extensive experience in planning and executing projects involving teams of 20 or more individuals.
- Deep understanding of the engineering and design processes related to marine vessels.
- Experience with regulatory requirements in the shipbuilding industry (e.g., ABS, 46 CFR, IEEE, and The US Coast Guard).
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, product design, and the ability to interpret engineering drawings.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an ABET-accredited institution is required (advanced degree preferred), along with at least 6 years of relevant Project Engineering or Project Management experience.
