Position Overview

Role Summary

The Staff Paralegal for Housing will be an integral part of our housing team, assisting low-income and senior tenants who are at risk of eviction. This full-time, non-exempt role will report directly to the Supervising Attorney.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of housing-related issues under the guidance of an attorney, including eviction defense and administrative hearings for subsidized housing.
  • Represent clients at administrative hearings, under attorney supervision.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to prepare cases for trial and administrative proceedings.
  • Assist clients with matters related to federally subsidized housing.
  • Engage in negotiation and settlement discussions with opposing parties and their legal representatives.
  • Draft legal documents under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed case notes and timekeeping in the case management system.
  • Support attorneys with client intake and initial consultations.
  • Organize and maintain client files, both electronic and physical.
  • Conduct client interviews and effectively communicate legal advice as relayed by the attorney.
  • Prepare legal forms, pleadings, memoranda, correspondence, and other essential documents.
  • Assist attorneys with case investigations, witness interviews, and legal research.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as record-keeping, document copying, and e-filing.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of the attorney-client relationship.
  • When qualified, provide interpretation and translation services for attorneys.
  • Engage with community organizations, conduct outreach, and provide educational presentations and materials.
  • Foster an inclusive and diverse environment through a multicultural perspective.
  • Mentor paralegal and law students, interns, and volunteers.
  • May be required to participate in clinics and workshops at various locations.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the organization's mission.
Qualifications
  • Paralegal certificate, paralegal degree, or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of a qualified attorney.
  • Preferred: Two years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of landlord-tenant law.
  • Preferred: Experience in a high-volume legal environment.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with legal software for California Judicial Council Forms.
  • Required: Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client and community engagement.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Trained in Westlaw and court filing systems.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Empathetic and energetic demeanor when working with clients.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse range of clients using client-centered and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Preferred: Bilingual proficiency.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment.
