Position Overview

Community Legal Aid SoCal (CLA SoCal) is a vibrant legal non-profit organization dedicated to addressing injustices and promoting social, economic, and racial equity through comprehensive legal support. We are seeking a dedicated Housing Team Staff Paralegal to assist low-income and senior tenants facing eviction. This full-time, non-exempt role reports directly to the Supervising Attorney.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of housing-related issues under attorney guidance, focusing on eviction defense and administrative hearings for subsidized housing.
  • Represent clients at administrative hearings with attorney supervision.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to prepare cases for trial and administrative hearings.
  • Assist clients with matters related to federally subsidized housing.
  • Engage in negotiation and settlement discussions with opposing parties and their legal representatives.
  • Draft legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Maintain accurate case notes and timekeeping within the case management system.
  • Support attorneys during client intake and initial appointments.
  • Organize and maintain client files, both electronic and physical.
  • Conduct client interviews and effectively communicate legal advice provided by attorneys.
  • Prepare legal forms, pleadings, memoranda, correspondence, and other essential documents.
  • Assist attorneys with case investigations, witness interviews, and legal research.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as record-keeping, document copying, and e-filing.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of the attorney-client relationship.
  • When qualified, provide interpretation and translation services for attorneys.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, conduct outreach, and deliver educational presentations.
  • Embrace a multicultural perspective, promoting inclusion and diversity.
  • Mentor paralegal and law students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Participate in clinics and workshops as required.
  • Fulfill additional duties as necessary to support the organization’s mission.
Qualifications
  • Paralegal certificate or degree, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of law-related experience under the supervision of a qualified attorney.
  • Preferred: Two years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of landlord-tenant law.
  • Preferred: Experience in a high-volume legal environment.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with legal software for California Judicial Council Forms.
  • Required: Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client engagement and community interaction.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Trained in Westlaw and court filing systems.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Empathetic approach when interacting with clients.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse range of clients using client-centered and trauma-informed practices.
  • Preferred: Bilingual proficiency.
