Position Summary: The Public Benefits Staff Attorney will be an integral part of the Public Benefits Unit, providing representation and legal assistance to community members encountering difficulties with their federal and state public benefits. This full-time exempt role reports directly to the Supervising Attorney.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal representation for clients in matters related to Social Security Retirement, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Insurance, General Relief, California Unemployment Insurance Benefits, CalFresh, CalWORKs, and CAPI.
  • Advise and represent clients during administrative reviews concerning eligibility for benefits, including Administrative Law Hearings.
  • Represent clients in State and Federal courts after administrative remedies have been exhausted, including appeals.
  • Assist with grant reporting and tracking deliverables as required by funding sources.
  • Conduct client interviews and maintain clear communication with clients.
  • Engage in thorough case investigations, including witness interviews and legal research.
  • Draft legal documents such as pleadings, memoranda, and correspondence.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to conduct outreach and provide educational presentations.
  • Participate in policy advocacy efforts and collaborate with community-based organizations to address systemic issues.
  • Supervise the legal work of paralegals, law students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Embrace a multicultural perspective that values inclusion and diversity.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the organization's objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing with the California Bar or another state bar with the ability to register as a legal services provider.
  • Preferred knowledge of public benefits programs such as Social Security and CalFresh.
  • Experience with Administrative Law and State and Federal Appeals is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with diverse, low-income clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to social justice and the values of CLA SoCal.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client representation and community engagement.
  • Bilingual proficiency is preferred.
