POSITION: Housing Staff Attorney
OVERVIEW: The Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is seeking a dedicated and empathetic attorney to support low-income clients within a non-profit legal environment. The Housing Staff Attorney will collaborate with a team of fellow attorneys to provide legal counsel and representation to vulnerable tenants facing eviction, landlord-tenant disputes, fair housing issues, and more. This is a full-time exempt role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct thorough client interviews and provide comprehensive legal advice.
- Represent clients throughout all phases of eviction litigation, including law and motion, settlement negotiations, trials, and post-trial relief.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the case management system.
- Work collaboratively with support staff to enhance service delivery.
- Engage in community education and outreach initiatives.
- Prepare grant reports and participate in program evaluation and monitoring.
- Perform additional duties as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position offers a hybrid work model, combining remote work with in-office and courthouse responsibilities. The role involves interacting with clients during challenging times, requiring sensitivity and resilience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active California State Bar license in good standing.
- Juris Doctor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Proficient in identifying legal issues and providing timely counsel.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly with low-income clients.
- Creative and passionate advocate with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal document preparation software.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client and community engagement.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is advantageous.
- Experience in civil legal aid or non-profit sectors.
- Familiarity with unlawful detainers and landlord-tenant law.
- Experience working with diverse communities.
SALARY & BENEFITS: Competitive salary range of $80,000 to $104,967 based on experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, health/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, and retirement plan options.
