POSITION: Housing Staff Counsel
OVERVIEW: The Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is in search of a dedicated and empathetic professional to support low-income individuals in a non-profit legal environment. The Housing Staff Counsel will collaborate with a team of two other housing attorneys to provide guidance and representation to low-income and senior tenants on matters including eviction defense, landlord-tenant disputes, fair housing issues, and more. This is a full-time exempt role.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Key responsibilities encompass a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting client consultations, offering legal advice and counsel, representing clients throughout all phases of unlawful detainer litigation—covering law and motion, settlement conferences, trials, and post-trial relief; maintaining and updating case management systems; collaborating effectively with support personnel; engaging in community education and outreach initiatives; preparing grant reports, evaluations, and monitoring; and performing additional duties as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position offers a hybrid work schedule, blending remote work with in-office and courthouse responsibilities, requiring at least one day per week in the office. The role involves assisting individuals during challenging and unstable times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active California State Bar license in good standing.
- Juris Doctor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong work ethic, initiative, and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Proficient in identifying legal issues and providing timely counsel.
- Excellent interpersonal and client communication skills, with a comfort level in working with low-income clients.
- Articulate and passionate advocate with strong written and verbal communication abilities, as well as problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and document preparation software.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for frequent travel within the service area.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Experience with civil legal aid organizations or non-profit entities.
- Background in unlawful detainers or landlord-tenant law.
- Experience collaborating with support staff.
- Familiarity with low-income communities.
