Program Summary

The Youth Outreach Adolescent Community Awareness Program (YOACAP) collaborates with the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) to enhance the well-being and health of individuals in Philadelphia through community-driven and culturally sensitive interventions. Since its inception in 1989, our focus has been on addressing health issues, workforce development, and essential life skills in low-income and underserved neighborhoods. Our mission has evolved to empower youth and young adults with job readiness skills, academic success, and technology utilization.

Role Description

The Outreach Worker is a part-time role dedicated to delivering information, services, and referrals through direct interactions with individuals in unconventional environments, during both standard and non-standard hours. This position involves engaging with community members in various locations such as parks, recreation centers, and other public spaces. The Outreach Worker aims to build supportive and trusting relationships with the target demographic and may act as an advocate for clients when necessary. Additionally, the Outreach Worker will collaborate with the Unit Leader to design outreach initiatives, recruit volunteers, and provide essential resources to individuals at risk of violence.

Compensation: $20 per hour, approximately 15 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver street outreach services, including the distribution of resource guides, personalized mentoring, and referrals.
  • Assist in outreach and engagement efforts, including client recruitment and necessary documentation.
  • Support the Unit Leader in developing and executing operational plans for street outreach, identifying effective locations for engagement, and selecting appropriate interventions and materials.
  • Collaborate with the Unit Leader to identify and connect with relevant community organizations for client recruitment, resource sharing, and networking.
  • Adhere to field safety protocols while conducting outreach activities.
  • Maintain a daily log of outreach efforts and activities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in street outreach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the target population and familiarity with their cultural context.
  • Knowledge of available community resources and the ability to refer clients appropriately.
  • Strong organizational skills and capacity to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Understanding of safety issues, client engagement strategies, and professionalism.
  • Familiarity with neighborhoods in Philadelphia and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Outgoing personality with a comfort level in initiating conversations with strangers.
  • Commitment to community involvement and providing resources to prevent violence.
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Ability to use public transportation or possess a valid driver's license with access to a vehicle.
