Position Overview

Location: This role is situated within a prominent legal office.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the Legal Director.

Employment Status: Full-time, exempt from overtime.

Work Schedule: Standard hours are Monday through Friday, with a hybrid work model requiring a combination of remote and on-site work.

Compensation: The starting salary for this role is set at $70,000, with the possibility of additional compensation for candidates with exceptional qualifications.

Role Description: ACT is in search of a highly skilled and knowledgeable Senior Immigration Paralegal to enhance our legal team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in immigration law and demonstrate a strong ability to manage deadlines while supporting a dynamic legal environment. Responsibilities will include delivering immigration services to ACT members and the broader immigrant community, with a focus on African immigrants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver immigration legal services to community members, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Gather and organize client data for grant reporting, collaborating with the Legal Director on submissions.
  • Conduct assessments to determine eligibility for immigration relief.
  • Coordinate with clients to collect necessary documentation promptly.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients regarding their cases and requirements.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents related to immigration matters, including petitions and applications.
  • Engage with government agencies concerning case statuses and inquiries.
  • Oversee junior paralegals and interns, providing mentorship and ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including managing correspondence and scheduling.
  • Organize and maintain both physical and electronic client files and documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance legal service delivery.
  • Refer clients to appropriate organizations and services as needed.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to ensure effective legal service provision.
  • Assist in organizing community outreach events and educational presentations.
  • Provide interpretation services when necessary.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience as a Paralegal or legal assistant in a law firm or non-profit setting.
  • A Bachelor's degree in legal studies or a related field is preferred.
  • Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients and partners.
  • Excellent organizational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proficient in common office software and tools.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Fluency in French or a widely spoken African language is highly desirable.
