Position Title: Staff Attorney

Department: Immigration Law

Reports To: Supervising Attorney and Director of the Legal Services Fund

FLSA Status: Local Exempt

Salary Range: As established by contract

Summary: The 32BJ Legal Services Fund is dedicated to providing legal guidance and representation to eligible members and their dependents. Under the supervision of the Supervising Attorneys and the Director of the Legal Services Fund, the Staff Attorney will deliver essential legal services to members of Building Service 32BJ who qualify under the union's Legal Services Plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in Immigration Law matters before various judicial and administrative bodies, including U.S. Immigration courts and USCIS.
  • Conduct client meetings to perform intakes and devise suitable legal strategies, guided by Supervising Attorneys.
  • Draft immigration-related documents, including forms, motions, and other legal paperwork.
  • Review, edit, and prepare correspondence and legal documents.
  • Communicate case developments to supervisors and provide comprehensive reports on case status.
  • Gather and maintain case records.
  • Engage with clients and administrative agencies through various communication methods, including phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Ensure timely updates to case files, including notes, correspondence, and records; perform necessary administrative tasks to maintain client files.
  • Conduct legal research as required.
  • Provide training and oversight to legal assistants, paralegals, and interns regarding work product.
  • Stay informed about substantive and procedural aspects of Immigration Law.
  • Possess knowledge of the areas covered under the Legal Services Plan.
  • Safeguard confidential information related to all clients.
  • Participate in member information sessions as directed by supervisory personnel, including necessary travel.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and authorization to practice law in any U.S. state are required.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is mandatory.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in immigration law with a solid understanding of the field is essential.
  • Proficiency in utilizing legal software for case management, record keeping, and communication is necessary.
  • Experience with ProLaw, Cerenade, or similar case management systems is preferred.
  • Capability to electronically file documents with administrative agencies and courts.

Requirements:

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor as a representative of the Legal Services Fund.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and exercise sound judgment with guidance from supervising attorneys.
  • Effectively present cases before courts and agencies, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate effectively and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Communicate efficiently with members and various professional, technical, and administrative personnel.
  • Exhibit outstanding communication, analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Possess excellent computer skills.
