Position Overview

Job Title: Staff Attorney

Department: Immigration Law

Reports To: Supervising Attorney and Director of the Legal Services Fund

FLSA Status: Local Exempt

Salary Range: As established by contract

Summary: The Building Service 32BJ Benefit Funds is dedicated to providing legal assistance and representation to eligible members and their dependents. The Staff Attorney will play a crucial role in delivering legal services to members of Building Service 32BJ who qualify under the union's Legal Services Plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer legal representation to clients in Immigration Law matters, including proceedings in U.S. Immigration courts and USCIS.
  • Conduct client meetings to assess needs and determine appropriate legal strategies, under the guidance of Supervising Attorneys.
  • Prepare and file immigration-related documents, including forms and motions.
  • Draft, review, and revise legal documents and correspondence.
  • Communicate case updates to supervisors and provide comprehensive reports on case progress.
  • Gather and maintain case records.
  • Engage with clients and administrative agencies through various communication methods.
  • Ensure timely updates to case files, including notes and correspondence, while performing necessary administrative tasks.
  • Conduct legal research as required.
  • Provide training and oversight to legal assistants, paralegals, and interns.
  • Maintain familiarity with substantive and procedural aspects of Immigration Law.
  • Understand the areas covered under the Legal Services Plan.
  • Safeguard confidential information pertaining to all clients.
  • Participate in member information sessions as directed, including travel as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and authorization to practice law in any U.S. state are required.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is essential.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in immigration law with substantial knowledge of the field.
  • Proficiency in legal software for case management and communication is necessary.
  • Experience with ProLaw, Cerenade, or similar case management systems is preferred.
  • Ability to electronically file documents with relevant agencies and courts.

Requirements:

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor as a representative of the Legal Services Fund.
  • Demonstrate analytical skills and sound legal judgment with support from supervising attorneys.
  • Effectively present cases before courts and agencies, both orally and in writing.
  • Collaborate effectively and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Communicate clearly with members and various professionals.
  • Exhibit strong communication, analytical, research, and writing abilities.
  • Possess excellent computer skills.
