Position Overview

Location: This role is situated within a prominent organization dedicated to supporting African immigrant communities.

Reporting To: Legal Director overseeing New York operations.

Employment Status: Full-time, exempt position.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, with a hybrid work model that includes both remote and on-site responsibilities.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $70,000, with potential for negotiation based on qualifications.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Deliver immigration legal services to community members, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Gather and organize client data for grant reporting and collaborate with the Legal Director on submissions.
  • Conduct assessments to determine client eligibility for immigration relief.
  • Coordinate with clients to collect necessary documentation promptly.
  • Maintain clear communication with clients regarding their cases and requirements.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents pertinent to immigration cases for submission to relevant authorities.
  • Engage with government agencies regarding case inquiries and status updates.
  • Oversee junior paralegals and interns, providing mentorship and ensuring workflow efficiency.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including managing legal correspondence and scheduling.
  • Organize and maintain both physical and digital client files and documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings and training related to legal services.
  • Facilitate referrals to partner organizations when necessary.
  • Engage with external stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
  • Support community outreach initiatives, including educational presentations and legal clinics.
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure comprehensive client support.
  • Provide interpretation services as required.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience as a Paralegal or legal assistant in a law firm or non-profit setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in legal studies or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficient in standard office software and communication tools.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and cultural backgrounds.
  • Fluency in French or a widely spoken African language is highly desirable.
