Summary:
The Building Service 32BJ Benefit Funds offers legal guidance and representation to qualified members and their dependents.
Under the supervision of the Supervising Attorneys and the Director of the Legal Services Fund, the Immigration Legal Counsel will deliver legal services to eligible members of Building Service 32BJ.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Provide legal representation to members in Immigration Law, including appearances before U.S. Immigration courts and USCIS.
2. Conduct client meetings to perform intakes and determine suitable legal strategies, guided by Supervising Attorneys.
3. Prepare immigration-related forms, motions, and legal documents.
4. Draft, review, and refine legal documents and correspondence.
5. Discuss case developments with supervisors and prepare reports on case status.
6. Obtain and manage case records.
7. Maintain regular communication with clients and administrative agencies through various channels.
8. Update case files promptly, including notes, correspondence, and records; perform additional administrative tasks as needed.
9. Conduct legal research.
10. Train and oversee legal assistants, paralegals, and interns regarding work product.
11. Stay informed about substantive and procedural aspects of Immigration Law.
12. Understand the areas covered under the Legal Service Plan.
13. Safeguard confidential information related to all clients.
14. Attend member information sessions as directed, including necessary travel.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) and authorization to practice law in any U.S. state required.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in immigration law with substantial knowledge of the field.
- Proficient in utilizing legal software for case management and communication.
- Familiarity with ProLaw, Cerenade, or similar case management systems preferred.
- Capability to electronically file documents with administrative agencies and courts.
Requirements:
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor as a representative of the Legal Services Fund.
- Analyze complex legal issues and exercise sound judgment with guidance from supervising attorneys.
- Present cases effectively before courts and agencies, both orally and in writing.
- Collaborate effectively and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Communicate clearly with members and various professionals.
- Exhibit strong communication, analytical, research, and writing skills.
- Demonstrate excellent computer proficiency.
