Our diverse membership encompasses various nationalities, cultures, and languages, with a significant representation of women and low-income individuals.

Role Description

ACT is seeking a skilled and committed Immigration Legal Counsel to enhance our legal team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong ability to engage with diverse cultural communities and provide essential legal services to ACT members and the broader African immigrant population. This position is vital for our New York branch and will work closely with the New York Legal Director and other legal personnel to fulfill the organization's objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct legal intake sessions, evaluate potential legal representation, and offer legal guidance.
  • Draft, prepare, and submit immigration petitions, motions, and applications.
  • Represent clients before USCIS and, if necessary, EOIR.
  • Organize and maintain client data and documentation related to immigration legal services.
  • Supervise administrative staff, including law students and interns.
  • Collaborate with the New York Legal Director on funding proposals and reports.
  • Refer clients to appropriate partner organizations as needed.
  • Facilitate Know Your Rights presentations and legal clinics for the immigrant community.
  • Build relationships with service organizations and stakeholders serving African immigrants.
Qualifications

We understand that candidates may not meet every qualification. If you can demonstrate the following, we encourage you to apply:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree.
  • Active member of a U.S. National Bar.
  • 2-3 years of experience in immigration law, preferably with low-income immigrant populations.
  • In-depth knowledge of immigration law, policy, and procedures.
  • Reside in or near the New York/Tristate area.
  • Experience with humanitarian relief applications, family-based applications, and naturalization.
  • Strong skills in case management, legal research, and writing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a community organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Cultural competence and experience with African immigrant communities.
  • Fluency in French or a widely spoken African language is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Alignment with ACT's mission and values.
