Employment Type: Temporary to hire
Work Schedule: Full-time hybrid role, necessitating a combination of remote work, on-site duties, and court appearances.
Compensation: $75,000
About ACT: African Communities Together (ACT) is dedicated to advocating for civil rights and enhancing opportunities for African immigrants in the U.S. and globally. The organization empowers its members to integrate socially, progress economically, and engage civically, while connecting them to essential services and fostering grassroots leadership.
Role Description: ACT is in search of a skilled and committed Immigration Legal Counsel to join our legal team. This position will focus on delivering direct legal services to ACT members and the broader African immigrant community, handling cases such as petitions for alien relatives, naturalization, adjustment of status, asylum, and various motions. The Immigration Legal Counsel will collaborate closely with the New York Legal Director and other team members to fulfill the Chapter's objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal intake sessions, evaluate potential legal representation, and provide legal counsel;
- Draft, prepare, and submit immigration petitions, motions, and applications;
- Represent clients before USCIS and, when necessary, EOIR;
- Organize and maintain client data and documentation related to immigration legal services;
- Supervise administrative personnel, including law students and interns;
- Collaborate with the New York Legal Director on funding proposals and legal service reports;
- Refer clients to appropriate partner organizations as needed;
- Conduct Know Your Rights presentations and legal clinics for the immigrant community;
- Build relationships with service organizations and stakeholders serving African immigrants;
Qualifications: We understand that not all candidates will meet every qualification. We encourage you to apply if you can demonstrate the following:
- Juris Doctorate (JD) degree;
- Active member of a U.S. National Bar;
- 2-3 years of experience in immigration law, preferably with low-income immigrants and non-profits;
- Familiarity with immigration law, policy, and procedures;
- Residence in or near the New York/Tristate area;
- Experience with humanitarian relief applications, family-based applications, and naturalization is highly valued;
- Proficient in drafting legal motions;
- Strong skills in case management, legal research, and writing;
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to work independently and collaboratively;
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Cultural competence and experience with African immigrant communities;
- Fluency in French or a widely spoken African language is preferred;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite;
- Willingness to work flexible hours as required;
- Alignment with ACT's mission and values.
