Los Angeles, California, United States Project 180 Full time
Job Overview

Position Title: Peer Navigator, RDP
Department: Project 180
Compensation: $21.32-$23.45/hour

About Us

SSG-Project 180 is dedicated to transforming lives through innovative, comprehensive services that enable individuals to remain in their communities rather than in institutional settings. As a pioneer in the forensic treatment sector, we provide exceptional, specialized programs that cater to thousands of individuals involved with the justice system. Our initiatives encompass various criminal justice intercepts, including pre-arrest interventions, court-based diversions, jail outreach, and intensive post-release support.

Program Details

The Rapid Diversion Program (RDP) is a County-operated initiative designed to redirect criminal defendants away from the legal system at the initial stages of court proceedings. This program offers in-court mental health assessments, connections to treatment services, and case management assistance to participants, leading to the dismissal of their criminal cases upon successful completion.

Role Responsibilities

The Peer Navigator plays a crucial role in providing peer support and counseling, leveraging personal experiences to assist clients in achieving their recovery objectives. This position focuses on enhancing community involvement and independence in daily activities, primarily through transportation services. The Peer Navigator will report directly to the Program Supervisor. A successful candidate will forge meaningful connections with clients and guide them in progressing towards their individual recovery aspirations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support clients in attending community appointments:
    • Accompany clients to various locations and assist with accessing necessary community resources.
    • Provide transportation for clients from LA County Jail and facilitate their initial engagement with our agency.
    • Utilize de-escalation and problem-solving techniques to assist clients, escalating issues to supervisors or emergency personnel when necessary.
    • Maintain active communication with the treatment team regarding scheduled appointments and any client-related observations or concerns.
    • Deliver exceptional customer service by interacting with clients and community partners in a respectful and professional manner.
    • Complete administrative tasks, including transporting medications and program supplies as required.
    • Adhere to traffic safety regulations and employ defensive driving strategies to reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Provide peer support and counseling:
    • Share personal experiences related to homelessness, incarceration, and recovery from substance use and mental health challenges when appropriate.
    • Encourage clients to develop and actively engage in meaningful community roles, such as family reunification, employment, and participation in community organizations.
    • Teach clients essential skills for community independence, including effective communication, public transit navigation, and organizational skills through modeling and prompts.
    • Ensure service delivery aligns with ethical standards and follows a harm reduction, strength-based, trauma-informed approach.
  • Meet Project 180 staff expectations:
    • Maintain regular attendance; availability for holiday or weekend work may be necessary.
    • Uphold the Agency's mission statement, values, policies, and procedures.
    • Perform additional duties as required.
    • Maintain any necessary licenses or registrations as applicable.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Empathetic with strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Culturally aware and sensitive to diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Collaborative, capable of working within diverse teams to address complex challenges.
  • Persistent and optimistic in overcoming obstacles.
  • Adaptable to changing circumstances and client needs in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Personal experience with mental health or substance use recovery or involvement in the criminal justice system.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and personal vehicle required for client transportation.
  • Must not be under any legal supervision.
  • Verification of employment eligibility and background check.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Preferred:

  • Experience with mental health, the criminal justice system, or homeless populations.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.

Working Conditions

Job responsibilities will be carried out in both office and field environments. The employee will be expected to move throughout the worksite, which may involve walking, standing, climbing stairs, or using mobility devices. The role requires driving, carrying up to 20 lbs, and effective communication skills.

Mental Requirements

The employee must be capable of performing complex tasks, managing routine distractions, and interacting professionally in high-stress situations while adhering to deadlines.
