Position Overview

Role Summary

The Director of Sponsored Programs is responsible for spearheading the development and management of externally funded grants and contracts. This role is crucial in aligning funding opportunities with the university's strategic goals, mission, and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Director collaborates with faculty and staff to identify potential funding sources and to prepare comprehensive applications for submission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research on grant opportunities and collaborate with faculty and staff to draft and refine grant proposals for submission to various funding agencies.
  • Lead and organize grant writing teams to create compelling proposals. Provide support to faculty and staff in the grant writing process.
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of training sessions and workshops focused on grant and budget development.
  • Deliver training sessions for faculty, staff, and administrators to enhance grant writing skills.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to faculty in preparing and submitting proposals to funding organizations.
  • Review funding applications to ensure compliance with agency requirements and accuracy.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting for Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).
  • Monitor technical reporting obligations as specified by funding organizations.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators to address challenges related to grant implementation.
  • Assist in the preparation of application packages for federal, state, and private sponsors, including budget development and necessary forms.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions for externally funded projects, including subawards.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs' Office by performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in English or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in all aspects of grant development, including research, proposal writing, and budget preparation.
  • Three to five years of successful experience in securing grants from public and private sectors in education or related fields.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of data visualization tools (preferably Power-BI) for creating and enhancing visual reports across various platforms.
  • Familiarity with higher education data systems and the ability to extract and translate data into meaningful academic reports.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups within the community.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write and edit research reports and create visual data representations.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis software such as R, SAS, Python, Tableau, or similar tools.
  • Experience with relational databases and reporting from large datasets (e.g., basic SQL querying).
  • Knowledge of survey development, distribution, and analysis.
  • Ability to analyze operational data needs and develop databases accordingly.
  • Capability to set and implement short- and long-term goals.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for establishing effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to move objects.
  • Light work typically involves walking or standing to a significant degree.
