Position Overview: The Civic Engagement Advocate will collaborate with the organizing team to foster connections with local residents and partner organizations. Employment Type: Full-time, Nonexempt, Temporary

Work Environment: The position is based in a vibrant community setting.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends and evenings; flexibility in hours is essential.

Compensation: $34.84 per hour; Comprehensive benefits package included.

About the Organization: Established in 1977, the Chinatown Community Development Center is a private non-profit committed to a holistic vision of community development. We manage numerous affordable housing units, serving a diverse population of low-income individuals and families. Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with community members to identify their needs and provide insights into their rights and available housing options.
  • Organize civic engagement activities such as town hall meetings and community forums, and conduct surveys to gather community input.
  • Build a network of support by recruiting, training, and managing volunteers for various initiatives.
  • Collaborate with working groups to create public education and outreach strategies that align with campaign goals.
  • Design outreach materials, ensuring accessibility through translation when necessary.
  • Conduct educational workshops and distribute materials to tenant groups and community allies.
  • Participate in community events and public meetings to promote civic engagement initiatives.
  • Utilize various communication channels to share event information with community members.
  • Engage in team meetings and coalition discussions to foster effective collaboration.
  • Contribute to citywide efforts aimed at promoting community-supported initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of media outreach strategies to enhance public awareness.
  • Maintain records of media coverage and community engagement efforts.
  • Develop and sustain positive relationships with tenant organizations and community agencies.
  • Encourage civic engagement discussions within low-income communities.

Qualifications

  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills, with the ability to conduct workshops in both English and Cantonese.
  • Familiarity with the challenges faced by low-income immigrant communities.
  • Fluency in Cantonese and proficiency in written Chinese.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and adaptability to various tasks.
  • Excellent listening skills and a patient demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Commitment to community development and improving the lives of low-income individuals.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in social services, sociology, psychology, or a related field.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Chinese and English.
  • Basic skills in word processing and spreadsheet software.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience or familiarity with the Chinatown community.
  • Knowledge of Chinese software applications.
  • Two years of experience in a non-profit setting serving low-income populations.
