Position: Lead Tenant Rights Counselor

Reports to: MSROC Program Manager

Compensation: $52,000-56,160 Full-Time, commensurate with experience. Position Objective: The Mission SRO Collaborative (MSROC) is dedicated to advocating for tenants residing in Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels. This role focuses on preserving the SRO housing stock, enhancing living conditions, and promoting housing justice.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct intake assessments and provide housing counseling to low-income tenants, including those who speak only Spanish, by evaluating housing issues, responding to inquiries, and delivering pertinent information.
  2. Track and monitor program deliverables to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  3. Facilitate warm referrals to other services for financial aid, counseling, or additional support tailored to the tenants' needs.
  4. Advocate for individuals and families by collaborating with external agencies regarding code enforcement and eviction prevention efforts to promote housing stability.
  5. Organize and lead educational workshops on tenant rights, leadership development initiatives, and peer outreach activities.
  6. Engage in advocacy and organizing efforts related to housing justice, including mobilizing tenants to identify achievable goals and strategizing for successful outcomes.
  7. Represent MSROC in coalitions focused on housing rights and coordinate collaborative efforts with other organizations in related fields.
  8. Ensure timely updates of clients' housing situations in the database and maintain proper documentation as per organizational policies.
  9. Plan and encourage tenant involvement in meetings, legal clinics, community events, and mobilizations through effective outreach and follow-up.
  10. Provide educational resources to tenants and families as needed.
  11. Collaborate with DSCS staff to integrate tenant feedback on community issues such as land use, civic engagement, immigrant rights, and economic justice.
  12. Prepare reports in accordance with program funding requirements.
  13. Participate in regular meetings with supervisors to discuss outreach efforts, address challenges, and plan future activities.

  1. Conduct business in alignment with the DSCS Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment in the best interests of the agency and community.
  2. Operate within the agency's mission, vision, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and language justice.
  3. Commit to treating each community member with respect and dignity.
  4. Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities on issues related to affordable housing, land use, and immigrant rights; familiarity with these issues in the Mission District and San Francisco is highly desirable.
  • Commitment to a broader vision for immigrant, housing, and economic justice.
  • Ability to thoroughly understand housing and tenant rights.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of clients with cultural humility and respect.
  • Capacity to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Effective multitasking and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply information from manuals, policies, and regulations.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience building trust with low-income immigrant families, including at least two years in roles such as organizer, tenant rights advocate, or counselor.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
