Position Objective: The Mission SRO Collaborative (MSROC) is dedicated to empowering SRO (Single Room Occupancy) hotel tenants in the Mission area. Our mission is to safeguard the availability of SRO housing, enhance living conditions, and advocate for housing justice.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct intake assessments and provide housing counseling to low-income tenants, including those who are monolingual Spanish speakers, by evaluating housing issues, addressing inquiries, and offering pertinent information.
  2. Track and monitor program deliverables effectively.
  3. Facilitate warm referrals to additional programs for financial aid, counseling, or other supportive services tailored to the individual needs of tenants/clients.
  4. Advocate for families and individuals by collaborating with external agencies on code enforcement and eviction prevention strategies to promote housing stability.
  5. Organize and lead educational workshops on tenant rights, leadership development initiatives, and peer outreach activities.
  6. Engage in advocacy and organizing efforts related to housing justice, including mobilizing tenants to identify achievable goals and strategizing for successful outcomes.
  7. Represent MSROC in coalitions focused on housing rights and coordinate collaborative efforts with other organizations in related fields.
  8. Ensure timely updates of client housing information in the database and maintain proper filing of supporting documents in line with organizational policies.
  9. Plan and promote tenant participation in various meetings, legal clinics, community events, and mobilizations through effective outreach and follow-up.
  10. Conduct outreach to tenants and distribute educational resources to families and individuals as needed.
  11. Collaborate with other staff members to integrate tenant feedback and support on community issues such as land use, civic engagement, immigrant rights, and economic justice.
  12. Generate reports in accordance with program funding requirements.
  13. Participate in regular meetings with supervisors to discuss outreach efforts, address challenges, and plan future activities.

  1. Conduct business in alignment with the DSCS Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and prioritizing the agency's and community's best interests.
  2. Operate within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and language justice.
  3. Commit to treating every community member with respect and dignity.
  4. Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities on issues related to affordable housing, land use, and/or immigrant and worker rights; familiarity with these matters in the Mission District and San Francisco is highly desirable.
  • Dedication to a broader vision of immigrant, housing, and economic justice.
  • Ability to develop a comprehensive understanding of housing and tenant rights.
  • Capability to engage with a diverse range of clients with cultural humility and respect.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong judgment, multitasking abilities, and capacity to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in reading, understanding, and applying information from manuals, policies, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Ideal candidates will have experience in building trust with low-income immigrant families/individuals, including at least two years of experience as an organizer, tenant rights advocate, and/or counselor.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
