Position Overview: The Youth Community Advocate will lead, coordinate, and inspire local youth to become proactive leaders within their communities. This role involves educating, planning, and overseeing youth-driven services and advocacy initiatives, along with leadership training programs and meetings. The individual will manage and oversee the Youth for Single Room Occupancy (YSRO) initiative, providing guidance and support to youth participants, volunteers, and interns. If you are passionate about mentoring and guiding young individuals, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, this position is tailored for you.

This role will collaborate with youth to implement environmental education and activities supported by various grants.

Employment Type: Full-time, Nonexempt, Regular

Work Environment: General business hours with flexible scheduling; availability for weekends and some evenings is required.

Compensation: $34.84 per hour; Comprehensive Benefits Package

About the Organization: Founded in 1977, the Chinatown Community Development Center is a private non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a holistic vision of community. We manage approximately 36 affordable housing properties, serving over 4,500 low-income seniors, single adults, formerly homeless individuals, and families from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Our mission encompasses building housing, nurturing grassroots leadership, and engaging low-income residents and youth. We are dedicated to providing culturally competent services and encourage applications from individuals of color.

Key Responsibilities:

Youth for Single Room Occupancy (YSRO):

  • Oversee the YSRO program
  • Lead, organize, and empower local youth to take on leadership roles in their communities:
  1. Design and execute youth-led services and advocacy projects
  2. Facilitate YSRO youth meetings and workshops, and assist in recruitment and outreach efforts
  3. Develop and implement youth leadership training and workshop curricula
  4. Coordinate youth service-learning initiatives (e.g., intergenerational programming, community-building activities, etc.)
  5. Recruit, mentor, and supervise youth interns and volunteers
  6. Organize social events for youth, including retreats and community gatherings
  7. Represent the organization and cultivate relationships with other youth programs, schools, community agencies, and city departments
  8. Participate in community meetings and public forums addressing youth issues and community needs
  9. Advocate for youth-related issues and community requirements
Represent the organization in advocacy efforts concerning youth issuesDeliver public presentations on program initiatives as necessaryAssist with grant writing and reporting tasks

Additional Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  • Ability to establish strong connections with youth
  • Excellent leadership, mentorship, organizational, and communication skills
  • Strong public speaking and marketing abilities
  • Flexibility to handle a variety of tasks
  • Awareness of the needs of low-income and monolingual populations, especially youth
  • Good listening skills with patience and adaptability
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the community and its resources
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher
  • Experience in grant writing

Education and Experience (Minimum Requirements):

  • Bilingual in Chinese and English
  • 1-2 years of experience in youth program management and engagement, particularly with low-income, immigrant communities
  • 1-2 years of experience in program planning and training facilitation
  • 1-2 years of experience working within the community and addressing relevant issues
  • 1-2 years of experience in grant writing
  • Experience working with youth aged 14-22
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, and Google Docs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant fields such as Ethnic Studies, Community Development, Social Work, or Education
  • Familiarity with local neighborhoods and populations
  • Experience in public speaking and community relations
  • Knowledge of community and housing issues affecting low-income groups
