Role Overview

As a Technical Services Field Engineer specializing in Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), you will provide expert engineering support to clients and field engineers. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring the optimal performance of VFD systems through your specialized knowledge and skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary expert for VFD products, advising clients and internal engineers to resolve technical issues.
  • Utilize remote diagnostic tools to analyze equipment failures and recommend solutions.
  • Offer technical assistance to clients and engineers when not engaged in fieldwork.
  • Conduct commissioning, installations, quality assessments, and performance evaluations of VFD systems to ensure compliance with design specifications.
  • Diagnose and rectify issues, including the repair or replacement of faulty components.
  • Communicate any hardware, software, or system design deficiencies to the factory and implement corrective measures as directed.
  • Maintain accurate records in the client relationship management (CRM) system to facilitate timely reporting.
  • Prepare and distribute Service Advisories to clients and field engineers as needed.
  • Draft and review field reports, providing them to clients upon request.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and maintain necessary safety qualifications for assigned tasks.
  • Manage warranty replacements efficiently, prioritizing urgent cases.
  • Be available for client support outside regular business hours on a rotating basis.
  • Investigate potential field modifications, report issues, and suggest improvements to the parent company as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in field engineering, customer support, or project engineering related to AC and DC Variable Frequency Drives in industrial settings.
  • In-depth knowledge of power conversion technologies.
  • Proven experience in configuring and tuning both digital and analog control systems.
  • Established track record of building successful relationships with clients and suppliers.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Ability to work at heights, including climbing cranes up to approximately 175 feet.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 35% of the time, often with short notice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in field engineering or customer support engineering for AC and DC Variable Frequency Drives in industrial environments.
  • Expertise in PLC systems from manufacturers such as Toshiba, GE, Rockwell, and Mitsubishi Electric.
  • Experience with A/C and DC drive systems, including AC/DC2000, AV/DC300, Innovation Series, T250, and legacy drives.
  • Background in field engineering within the metals rolling or container crane systems sectors.
  • Knowledge of controls engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with LAN Topology for ISBUS, Profibus, Modbus, EGD, DeviceNet, TCnet, MELPAC, and TOSLINE.
