General Role Overview

Deliver specialized expertise in variable frequency drives (VFD) and control engineering, providing both onsite and remote service and maintenance support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the factory expert for VFD products, advising clients and company engineers to resolve technical issues.
  • Offer technical assistance to clients and fellow engineers when not actively in the field.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on client systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Utilize remote diagnostic tools to analyze equipment failures, performing necessary repairs on-site as required.
  • Communicate any hardware, software, or system design deficiencies to the factory, implementing corrective actions as directed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair defective components, ensuring system reliability.
  • Maintain accurate records in the client relationship management (CRM) tool to facilitate timely reporting.
  • Prepare and issue Service Advices to clients and field engineers as approved.
  • Document fieldwork by writing and submitting detailed service reports to clients.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain current safety qualifications relevant to assigned tasks.
  • Configure equipment to assist suppliers in resolving product failures efficiently.
  • Address client issues, including after-hours support as scheduled.
  • Investigate proposed field changes, reporting problems and recommending solutions to the parent company as necessary.
  • Educate client personnel on system maintenance and operation procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for additional value-added products and services through proactive client engagement.
  • Perform commissioning, installations, quality inspections, and performance testing of VFDs to meet design specifications as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of field engineering experience in power conversion, particularly with A/C VFDs, along with familiarity in power distribution and rotating machinery.
  • Proven ability to build successful working relationships with clients and suppliers.
  • Strong personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in assigned responsibilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 50%, often with short notice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in technical services, field, or customer support engineering focused on AC and DC Variable Frequency Drives in an industrial setting.
  • Field engineering experience in metals rolling, container crane systems, or paper industries.
  • Familiarity with legacy A/C and DC VFD engineering, including AC/DC2000, AV/DC300, and Innovation Series.
  • Experience in controls engineering with various protocols such as ISBUS, Profibus, Modbus, EGD, DeviceNet, TCnet, MELPAC, and TOSLINE.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs from manufacturers like Toshiba, GE, Rockwell, and Mitsubishi Electric.
  • Proven ability to install, inspect, and maintain equipment per relevant operating instructions.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin, both written and verbal, in addition to English, for international client communications.
