Position Overview

This position is accountable for the underwriting, expansion, and profitability of designated industry segments, developing and managing profit strategies aligned with Middle Market goals. You will lead the national field underwriting team, ensuring effective risk selection, fostering agent and broker relationships, managing portfolios, and overseeing quality underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the P&L results for assigned industry segments.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans to cultivate profitable business opportunities within the Commercial Lines Middle Market.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to establish and uphold underwriting guidelines and standards.
  • Work with field underwriting teams to devise strategies for client acquisition and retention.
  • Monitor loss trends and regulatory developments, implementing strategies for continuous portfolio enhancement.
  • Educate field teams on industry-specific knowledge, including insurance principles and risk factors.
  • Partner with actuaries to refine pricing models pertinent to assigned industries.
  • Conduct rigorous portfolio management to ensure alignment with risk appetite and strategic goals.
  • Perform quality reviews to confirm adherence to underwriting strategies.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to field underwriting teams.
  • Manage capacity and reinsurance placements effectively.
  • Engage with brokers and agents to strengthen relationships and enhance market understanding.
  • Participate in industry events to gather insights and foster connections.
  • Create educational materials to support team and broker development.
  • Encourage continuous learning and professional growth among team members.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess comprehensive knowledge of industry strategies, including underwriting, pricing, and operations. Strong analytical skills and a proven track record in decision-making are essential. The ability to build relationships and influence outcomes at all organizational levels is crucial.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in business or a related field is preferred, with advanced studies being advantageous. Candidates should have a minimum of 15 years of experience in Middle Market or related commercial lines underwriting, including at least 10 years in a management capacity.

Licenses and Certifications:

Professional designations such as CPCU or ARM are preferred.
