Job Overview
Are you passionate about literature and assisting others? The New York Public Library has been a vital source of free literature, information, and education for the community for over a century. As a Library Page, you will play a crucial role in supporting library operations while gaining insight into the library system. This position is designed to provide you with a foundational understanding of library work, enabling you to explore potential career paths within this field. We seek candidates who exhibit a strong work ethic, reliability, and exceptional communication skills. As a representative of the library, a friendly and approachable demeanor is essential.
As a Library Page, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Library Page Fellowship Program, a career development initiative that empowers youth to shape their professional journeys. This program offers resources to enhance career readiness, explore career aspirations, and receive on-the-job training and mentorship.
The Library Page position requires a commitment of 19 hours per week, with scheduling during operational hours from Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Please note that schedules may vary based on library needs and are subject to change.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of a Page supervisor, the Library Page will:
- Open and sort internal and external correspondence
- Assist in preparing library materials, including books, DVDs, CDs, microfilm, and microfiche for internal and external distribution
- Organize the shipping area and manage supplies
- Deliver materials to designated locations and staff
- Interfile paperwork as necessary
- Perform additional related tasks as required
Education and Certifications
- Current enrollment in a degree program at an accredited institution
- Proper employment certificate for minors under 18 as mandated by state law
- Ability to troubleshoot basic computer and printer issues is preferred
- Familiarity with eReaders and library technologies is preferred
- Proficiency in foreign languages is preferred
- Ability to accurately and efficiently sort and arrange items in alphanumeric order
- Strong organizational skills and the capacity to follow detailed instructions in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to engage with a diverse patron base
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Reliability and professionalism in all tasks
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications

- Moderate lifting (up to 40 lbs) is required
- Pushing book trucks
- Standing for extended periods (1-2 hours at a time)

Schedule
19 hours per week
