Position Overview

APT Research is seeking a highly skilled Lead Safety Systems Engineer to enhance our commercial spaceflight initiatives. This role offers hybrid work flexibility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in design evaluations and the formulation of safety requirements.
  • Review and contribute to system and subsystem hazard analyses and assessments.
  • Prepare hazard reports and safety assessments, including necessary documentation.
  • Conduct reviews of system and subsystem Failure Mode and Effects Analysis for hazard identification.
  • Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Coordinate and integrate with internal Safety and Mission Assurance disciplines and engineering/management teams.
  • Oversee System Safety and Safety and Mission Assurance programs for vendors and suppliers.
  • Act as a representative on the Safety Review Panel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics) from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • 8-15+ years of experience with a Bachelor's degree or 6-10+ years with a Master's degree.
  • Proven experience in System Safety Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Commercial/NASA spacecraft programs.
  • Expertise in safety analysis methodologies, including System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis and FTA.
  • Knowledge of hazard control verification and safety testing processes.
  • Understanding of the Safety Review Process, including the creation of Safety Data Packages (SDPs) and presentations.
  • Familiarity with Human Rating Certification requirements and processes.
  • Experience in the aerospace sector, particularly within NASA Centers, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to thrive in an inclusive and communicative team environment.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal oversight, make sound decisions, and demonstrate good judgment.
  • Essential: A proactive attitude and an enduring curiosity.

Security Clearance:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Eligibility to obtain a secret clearance if necessary.

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with various management levels, including presentation capabilities.
  • Aptitude for working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while delivering high-quality results on schedule.
  • Ability to tackle complex challenges and devise innovative solutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of Safety and Mission Assurance requirements development, verification, validation, and closure.
  • Interpersonal skills that enhance productivity, promote teamwork, and foster effective relationships with colleagues and clients.

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid model: Primarily working from a personal office with occasional meetings as required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing.
  • Professional interaction with coworkers, management, and clients is essential.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional domestic travel (within the U.S.) may be required, less than 10%.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods at a workstation.
  • Capability to lift objects over 15 lbs.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Work attire must be suitable for the position and not pose safety risks.
