JOB DESCRIPTION: HALO Systems Safety Engineer

Qualified Technical Services is excited to offer a position supporting the NASA Safety and Mission Assurance Engineering Contract (SMAEC II) at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Join our dedicated team and contribute to the ongoing mission of space exploration. The Gateway Program establishes a critical presence around the moon, facilitating access to the lunar surface and future missions to Mars, with one of its key components being the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) element. The responsibilities of the HALO Systems Safety Engineer encompass conducting system safety and reliability assessments of the proposed HALO Gateway element prior to on-orbit operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in Design Reviews of HALO systems hardware, providing engineering evaluations against design and safety standards.
  • Ensure the technical soundness of analyses developed for the HALO project.
  • This role will necessitate extensive oral and written communication with high-level customer personnel. Presentations to management and NASA stakeholders are an anticipated aspect of this position.
  • Engage in HALO/Gateway forums to deliver Safety and Mission Assurance engineering support in vehicle development. Provide technical engineering assistance to NASA HALO/Gateway Program Representatives for decision-making boards and panels.
  • Review and evaluate safety analysis hazard reports, requirement non-compliances, and support programmatic safety assessments.
  • Assess safety and mission assurance implications of proposed engineering modifications to HALO/Gateway hardware and processes.
  • Examine Failure Modes and Effects Analyses and Critical Items for Safety and Mission Assurance engineering for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate areas for risk mitigation or acceptance by the HALO/Gateway team.
REQUIREMENTS: HALO Systems Safety Engineer

Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field.

Experience: Over fifteen years of experience in operations and/or engineering.

Essential Skills and Attributes:
  • Exceptional oral and above-average written communication skills; Ability to cultivate strong working relationships with customers, colleagues, and management;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for preparing detailed reports, presentations, and spreadsheets to convey technical information to customers and management.
  • Experience delivering detailed technical briefings and progress reports to team members, customers, and management.
  • Experience in requirements development, verification, or assurance.
  • Willingness to travel (~10%).
Additional Desired Skills
  • Familiarity with the NASA organization and the International Space Station (ISS) subsystems and components.
  • Knowledge of fault tree analysis and risk management methodologies.
  • An understanding of the system safety hazards analysis process, including the generation of hazard analyses.
