Job Summary

As a key member of our library staff, you will be responsible for providing expert cataloging and metadata services to ensure the discoverability and accessibility of our library materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cataloging and Metadata Services: Perform original and complex copy-cataloging of library materials, working in both the library catalog and national databases, to ensure compliance with national and local standards.
  • Policies and Procedures: Develop and implement cataloging policies and address cataloging priorities to ensure consistency and accuracy in our cataloging practices.
  • Problem-Solving: Resolve complex problems associated with bibliographic, authority, item, and holding records, including headings conflicts and other discrepancies.
  • Vendor-Supplied Records: Review and enhance vendor-supplied MARC records for batch-loading into the library catalog.
  • Supervision: Supervise a Senior Catalog Associate and provide guidance and support to ensure the successful completion of cataloging tasks.
  • Statistics and Reporting: Provide statistics to library leadership and outside professional organizations as requested.
  • Research and Instruction: Staff the Research Desk and teach Research and Information literacy skills in the classroom and in one-on-one meetings as needed, modeling best practices from instructional design and the science of learning.
  • Web Guides and Learning Materials: Develop web guides and other learning and outreach materials that highlight library resources and exhibit universal design principles for accessibility.
Requirements
  • Education: Graduate degree in library or information science from an accredited institution, or its equivalent, required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years previous library experience, required, including experience with cataloging/metadata procedures, library catalogs, and library systems, including minimum 1 year previous experience with ExLibris' Alma/Primo library services platform.
  • Language Skills: Working knowledge of one or more languages taught at Middlebury, required.
  • Skills and Abilities: Complex problem-solving and research skills involving the analysis and interpretation of information; strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently, required.
Working Conditions

The ability to use computers on a daily basis for prolonged periods of time is required.
