Community Support Specialist

The Arc of King County is dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout their lives, from early diagnosis to end-of-life care. Our services encompass: Information and Family Support for individuals with IDD and their families; Supported Living Services for adults in the community; Financial Management Assistance for those needing help with finances; Homelessness Prevention for families at risk of losing their homes; and Advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities and their allies striving for systemic equity in our community. The Arc of King County champions the rights of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), supporting their inclusion in all aspects of community life.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Support Specialist (CSS) is a key role focused on providing assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their residences and within the community. The CSS is tasked with the daily execution of the service plan, including necessary documentation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate community engagement and social integration for participants.
  • Accompany participants to various appointments (medical, housing, Individual Support Plans).
  • Maintain quarterly safety logs.
  • Support participants in setting and achieving personal goals aligned with their ISP objectives.
  • Assist participants with housing evaluations and searches.
  • Complete all required documentation and daily reports.
  • Guide participants in managing their finances according to their Independent Financial Plan (IFP).
  • Provide assistance with home management tasks (cleaning, cooking, shopping, etc.).
  • Support participants in achieving their goals as directed by healthcare professionals.
  • Administer medications as delegated when necessary.
  • Assist with personal care tasks as required.
  • Provide the HR Director with documentation of training and certifications as mandated by state regulations.
  • Record participant appointments in the designated system.
  • Collaborate with team leads to address participant support needs.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff by exemplifying best practices and sharing relevant participant support information.
  • This list is not exhaustive; management may assign additional duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Effective communication skills for providing feedback to supervisors and coordinators; proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and relevant software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the Coordinator Team and Health Advocate Professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Capability to analyze data and offer recommendations.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and database management.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and seek assistance when necessary.

OR a combination of education, experience, and measurable performance demonstrating the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to utilize public transportation; willingness to work throughout the designated area.
  • Flexibility in working hours and days is essential.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This position is hourly and non-exempt, with opportunities for both full-time and part-time work. Benefits are available in accordance with company policies.
