Job Overview

Position: Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) - Supported Employment Program

Organization: Indian Rivers Behavioral Health

Work Schedule: Part-Time (Monday - Thursday, 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM & 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM)

Key Competencies:

  2. Knowledge and skills for building strong relationships with individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
  3. Understanding of mental health conditions, recovery principles, and psychosocial rehabilitation components.
  4. Ability to collaborate within the organization to meet consumer needs.
  5. Familiarity with treatment methods and services offered by the agency.
  6. Capability to manage crisis situations effectively.
  7. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage routine administrative and rehabilitation responsibilities independently.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist individuals in the IPS-SEP program to achieve their employment goals.
  • Participate in meetings with clients, fostering self-determination and recovery, while demonstrating self-advocacy skills.
  • Engage in treatment team discussions to encourage the use of self-directed advocacy tools.
  • Support clients in goal-setting and developing career profiles.
  • Guide clients in accessing appropriate community services.
  • Provide information regarding benefits such as SSI, SSDI, and Medicaid.
  • Encourage client participation in additional programs and services to promote employment.
  • Model self-advocacy techniques for addressing workplace accommodations.
  • Educate clients on wellness management strategies and assist in creating personal self-management plans.
  • Provide training to team members to enhance understanding of self-advocacy and peer support roles.
  • Teach transportation skills to facilitate commuting to work.
  • Share personal experiences to illustrate successful employment strategies.
  • Support clients in making informed choices about employment and community involvement.
  • Enhance social skills that contribute to job acquisition and retention.
  • Assist clients in overcoming employment barriers and addressing workplace challenges.
  • Help clients gather necessary documentation for employment.
  • Research potential job opportunities with clients based on their interests.
  • Assist clients in completing job applications, resumes, and cover letters.
  • Explore career and educational goals with clients.
  • Teach job-seeking skills, including computer usage.
  • Accompany clients to recovery support groups and relevant meetings when appropriate.
  • Provide guidance on financial wellness and asset development.
  • Offer outreach services to individuals who may disengage from the program.
  • Seek supervision and consultation as necessary.
  • Treat clients with respect, dignity, and compassion.
  • Embrace feedback for personal and professional growth.
  • Educate new clients about available services and the recovery process.
  • Utilize problem-solving techniques with clients.
  • Assist clients in maintaining their self-care routines.
  • Develop and sustain therapeutic relationships to identify emotional or behavioral changes that may require further intervention.
  • Teach clients to recognize and counter negative self-talk.
  • Contribute to staff meetings and interdisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Document relevant information in client records accurately and promptly.
  • Model effective communication, recovery-oriented living skills, and coping strategies.
  • Stay informed about current trends in mental health through ongoing education.
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities provided by the organization.
  • Advocate for effective recovery-based services.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Follow safety and health protocols while on duty.
  • Maintain awareness of organizational communications and updates.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and maintain training requirements.
  • Comply with attendance and punctuality policies.
  • Maintain health and safety standards, including necessary certifications.
  • Identify opportunities for service quality improvement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current or former consumer of mental health services.
  • Willingness to obtain Peer Specialist Certification from the Alabama Department of Mental Health.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Working Conditions: The role involves working in various environments, including outpatient centers, clients' homes, and community settings. The position may involve exposure to stressful situations and requires the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and navigate stairs.
