Educational Support Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Fundamental knowledge, skills, and ability to utilize computer programs and related technology for educators.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, administrators, and educators in support of instruction.
  3. Capability to move and lift moderately heavy objects.
  4. Physical ability to navigate the classroom to monitor and supervise students.

JOB GOAL

To assist the educator in achieving defined instructional objectives and to support students in maximizing the instructional program and available resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs tasks related to classroom activities under the guidance of certified teacher(s).
  2. Works with small groups of students to reinforce and re-teach material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
  3. Provides individual support to students requiring special attention.
  4. Guides independent study, enrichment work, remedial assistance, and follow-up tasks as specified by the teacher(s).
  5. Offers feedback regarding student progress to the regular classroom teacher(s).
  6. Assists teacher(s) with drill work, reading, and storytelling as appropriate.
  7. Helps with checking notebooks, correcting assignments, and supervising assessments and make-up work.
  8. Assists in the preparation of instructional materials, bulletin boards, and other educational displays.
  9. Sets up and stores audio-visual equipment for classroom use.
  10. Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack breaks and clothing routines as directed.
  11. Supervises small groups who leave the classroom for library work (under the supervision of the librarian).
  12. Helps supervise students during lunch periods, assemblies, and field trips.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of information as required by school policy.
  14. Upholds a high level of ethical and professional standards as expected of all personnel.
  15. Participates in in-service training provided by the System and the Alabama State Department of Education.
  16. Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy Manual and the Board's Salary Schedule - Instructional Aide - Grade I (7 hour) or Grade II (7.5 hours).

EVALUATION

Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
