Position Summary:

The Chief Financial Officer, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, will oversee the financial operations of the New Mexico State University Foundation. This role is pivotal in developing and executing effective financial policies and procedures, liaising with external auditors, and managing fiscal year-end audits and tax filings.

The CFO will regularly present financial updates to the Board of Directors and various committees, ensuring transparency regarding the Foundation's financial status and investments. This position includes direct management of the Foundation's Accounting, Finance, Gift Administration, and IT departments, ensuring compliance with policies, GAAP standards, and applicable laws.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage financial reporting and internal control operations to protect assets and uphold accounting principles, supporting the Foundation's financial and strategic goals.
  • Coordinate the annual audit with an independent CPA firm, ensuring timely completion of financial statements and necessary documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to various financial recording and reporting regulations, overseeing the preparation of all required tax returns.
  • Develop and maintain the Foundation's financial accounting system for accurate tracking of funds and reporting of operating results.
  • Design financial management policies and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Prepare comprehensive financial reports, including budgets, forecasts, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Foundation's Outsourced Chief Investment Officer to optimize cash management and investment strategies.
  • Facilitate effective communication between the Foundation Board, executive leadership, and finance staff to ensure transparency in financial operations.
  • Lead the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff within the Accounting, Finance, Gift Administration, and IT departments, fostering a culture of transparency and effective communication.
  • Work in partnership with the University to ensure timely and appropriate use of current funds.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; Master's degree preferred.
  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in financial management within higher education foundations or similar organizations.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting standards relevant to higher education foundations and applicable laws.
  • Extensive experience in treasury and investment functions.
  • Proven ability to implement transformational change and strategic thinking in financial processes.
  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on team development and retention.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management abilities.
  • Dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented personality with a proactive approach to achieving results.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions in compliance with ADA, FMLA, and other relevant standards.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Effective communication skills, including clear verbal communication.
