Job Responsibilities

As a Land Use Engineering Specialist, you will play a vital role in shaping the roadways that connect communities and facilitate progress throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This entry-level position involves collaborating with the Assistant Resident Engineer Land Use to manage land development initiatives, oversee permit approvals, and conduct subdivision inspections and acceptance for various counties within Virginia.

The selected candidate will engage with local government representatives, developers, consultants, and VDOT personnel to evaluate the integrity of designs and the implications of land development requests on the state-maintained road system. Responsibilities also include performing technical assessments of engineering plans, including site layouts, subdivision designs, roadway configurations, and utility plans.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings and plans
  • Understanding of roadway geometric design and engineering principles
  • Familiarity with subdivision street requirements, entrance standards, and road design criteria
  • Ability to apply VDOT's guidelines and standards in reviews, providing clear feedback to the Area Land Use Engineer and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of land use permit policies, construction practices, material specifications, and street acceptance processes
  • Detail-oriented with effective oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Proficient in computer usage and software applications
  • Valid Driver's License is mandatory
Additional Considerations
  • Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience in transportation projects demonstrating the ability to fulfill job responsibilities
  • Experience in plan reviews, design, or traffic engineering is advantageous but not required
  • EIT or PE License, DCR certification as Plan Reviewer, or the ability to obtain such credentials is a plus
  • Experience in land development plan review or application of engineering principles to highway construction projects is favorable
