Position Overview

At Cocoon House, we collaborate with youth, families, and communities in Snohomish County to disrupt the cycle of homelessness through outreach, housing solutions, and preventive measures. The Community Engagement Specialist plays a vital role in assisting youth and families in reaching their prevention plan objectives by navigating systems, overcoming obstacles, and fostering connections to community resources and networks.

This position also entails community outreach and partnership development as part of Family Reconciliation Services (FRS) in collaboration with relevant agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

Part-Time: Monday-Friday | On-site in Everett

Compensation: $23-25/hr | Additional $1.50/hr for multilingual capabilities with relevant documentation

  • Engage in community outreach to educational institutions, treatment centers, hospitals, juvenile justice facilities, family resource centers, community organizations, and programs for runaway and homeless youth to enhance awareness of FRS and identify potential beneficiaries.
  • Provide up-to-date information regarding eligibility for FRS and the availability of public and community resources.
  • Facilitate access to essential economic supports to address families' basic needs and promote stability.
  • Encourage youth and families to participate in their cultural traditions and practices to foster resilience through cultural connections.
  • Coordinate referrals with service providers and care systems.
  • Identify and address barriers and gaps in services, ensuring accessibility needs of youth and families are met.
  • Make mandated reports to child protective services when there is reasonable cause to believe a youth has experienced abuse or neglect.
  • Provide follow-up and aftercare to ensure connections to community resources are established and the needs of youth and families are adequately addressed.
  • Support other Cocoon House programs to enhance staff understanding of family engagement and prevention efforts as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Family Engagement in training Cocoon House staff on best practices for working with families.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Cocoon House's equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • This role offers a flexible work schedule, including some evening hours and at least one weekend each month.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or a related field, OR a Bachelor's degree in the same fields with one year of relevant experience in counseling, case management, or system navigation, or an Associate's degree with two years of related experience is required. Relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development, family dynamics, and strength-based, solution-focused approaches to family reconciliation.
  • In-depth understanding of child welfare, juvenile justice, and the disproportionate impact of these systems on marginalized communities.
  • Experience working with diverse and historically underserved populations.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Familiarity with street culture, adolescent development, and strengths-based methodologies is preferred.
  • Individuals with lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to hear alarms and voices.
  • Ability to read and comprehend various materials.
  • Ability to operate a phone, computer, and maintain accurate records.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to navigate stairs in case of emergencies involving youth.
