Position Overview

This position is accountable for the underwriting, expansion, and profitability of designated industry segments by developing and overseeing profit strategies that align with Middle Market goals. You will lead the national field underwriting team, ensuring effective risk selection, managing agent and broker relationships, overseeing portfolio management, and providing strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the P&L outcomes for assigned industry segments.
  • Formulate and execute both long-term and short-term strategic plans to capitalize on profitable business opportunities within the Commercial Lines Middle Market.
  • Work collaboratively with business leaders to set and uphold underwriting guidelines, authority levels, risk appetite, and minimum standards for assigned industries.
  • Partner with field underwriting teams to devise strategies aimed at attracting new clients and retaining current ones.
  • Analyze loss trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks for assigned segments, implementing strategies for continuous portfolio enhancement.
  • Educate field underwriting teams on industry-specific knowledge, including insurance principles, market trends, and risk considerations.
  • Collaborate with actuaries to refine pricing models relevant to the assigned industry.
  • Conduct rigorous portfolio management to ensure risk selection aligns with appetite and strategic objectives.
  • Perform underwriting quality assessments to ensure alignment with established strategies and expectations.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to field underwriting teams.
  • Manage capacity, including CAT and limits management, and oversee reinsurance placements.
  • Engage with brokers and agents within defined industry practices to deepen understanding of risks and strengthen relationships.
  • Participate in broker meetings and industry events to enhance relationships and gather market insights.
  • Develop industry white papers to advance the knowledge of our team and broker partners.
  • Encourage continuous learning and development among team members, including the establishment of an industry-specific certification program.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the VP, MM National Custom Solutions Practice Leader.

Qualifications:

Extensive knowledge of industry strategy encompassing underwriting, pricing, operations, finance, and product development is essential. Strong underwriting skills, industry segment expertise, and overall business acumen are required. Proven ability to navigate strategic and organizational challenges while managing a clear vision and purpose is crucial. Excellent problem-solving abilities and a history of sound decision-making are necessary. Strong analytical skills and a knack for financial evaluation of business performance are expected.

Education: A degree in business or a related field is preferred; advanced studies are a plus.

Licenses/Certifications: CPCU, ARM, or other relevant industry designations are preferred.

Experience: Typically requires 15+ years in Middle Market or related commercial lines underwriting, including a minimum of 10 years in a management role.
