Role Overview

This position is accountable for the underwriting, expansion, and profitability of designated industry segments. You will develop and manage profit strategies that align with Middle Market goals. In this role, you will lead the national field underwriting team by ensuring effective risk selection, fostering agent and broker relationships, managing portfolios, and providing strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the P&L results for assigned industry segments.
  • Formulate and execute strategic plans to cultivate profitable business opportunities within the Commercial Lines Middle Market.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to establish and uphold underwriting guidelines, authority, and standards.
  • Work with field underwriting teams to devise strategies for attracting new clients and retaining existing ones.
  • Monitor loss trends and regulatory shifts, implementing continuous improvement strategies for portfolio enhancement.
  • Educate field underwriting teams on industry-specific knowledge, including insurance principles and risk factors.
  • Partner with actuaries to refine pricing models tailored to the assigned industry.
  • Conduct rigorous portfolio management to ensure alignment with risk appetite and strategy.
  • Perform underwriting quality reviews to ensure adherence to strategy and expectations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field underwriting teams.
  • Manage capacity and reinsurance placements effectively.
  • Engage with brokers and agents to deepen understanding of risks and strengthen relationships.
  • Participate in industry events to enhance relationships and gather market insights.
  • Develop industry white papers to educate team members and broker partners.
  • Encourage continuous learning and development within the team.

Qualifications:

To succeed in this role, you should possess comprehensive knowledge of industry strategies, including underwriting, pricing, and operations. Strong analytical skills and a proven ability to make informed decisions are essential. You should also demonstrate a capacity for collaboration and relationship-building across the organization.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in business or a related field is preferred, with advanced studies being advantageous. Typically, candidates will have 15+ years of experience in Middle Market or related commercial lines underwriting, including at least 10 years in a management capacity.
