Position Title: Accountant

Salary: $83, $103,459.20 Annually

Classification Overview:

Under the guidance of management, the Accountant will engage in a range of professional accounting responsibilities, which include the preparation, maintenance, analysis, verification, and reconciliation of intricate financial transactions, statements, records, and reports. This role also involves coordinating and overseeing various accounting functions, assisting in the annual audit preparation, and providing essential support to management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Execute a variety of advanced accounting tasks, ensuring the accuracy of general and specialized ledgers as well as subsidiary financial systems.
  2. Oversee the auditing of accounts payable, ensuring accuracy, proper coding, and appropriate discounts.
  3. Manage the billing, recording, and monthly reconciliation of accounts receivable, including follow-up on overdue accounts.
  4. Participate in the posting, balancing, and reconciliation of the general ledger and subsidiary accounts, assisting with monthly and year-end financial closings.
  5. Review payroll adjustments and various financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
  6. Compile and prepare diverse financial, statistical, and special reports, contributing to the comprehensive annual financial report.
  7. Evaluate accounting and internal control procedures within departments and recommend improvements.
  8. Assist in the development and maintenance of specialized accounting information systems.
  9. Support independent auditors as necessary.
  10. Record journal entries related to depreciation, asset sales, and other financial activities.
  11. Coordinate debt issuance and reporting, reviewing journal entries and preparing quarterly analyses.

Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of public agency financial management principles, including governmental accounting, auditing, and reporting functions.
  • Proficiency in analyzing general ledgers and preparing journal entries.
  • Familiarity with financial record-keeping and reporting practices.
  • Advanced mathematical skills and knowledge of automated financial systems.
  • Awareness of relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Skills:

  • Ability to perform complex accounting and financial analysis tasks.
  • Competence in supervising and training technical and clerical staff.
  • Capability to analyze financial data and draw informed conclusions.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, along with two years of progressively responsible governmental accounting experience is preferred.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring the ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving repetitive hand movements.
