The Emergency Care Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting the Emergency Department (ED) Nursing and Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) teams by executing tasks that facilitate the care and treatment of patients experiencing medical emergencies. This position acts as a vital link among healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. Responsibilities include managing, replenishing, and overseeing inventory and supply levels within the department, as well as supporting various departmental functions.

  • Assists in patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), anticipating the needs of the healthcare team and patients.
  • Conducts fundamental patient care tasks, including monitoring vital signs, aiding with personal hygiene, supporting mobility, collecting specimens, and preparing necessary equipment and supplies for medical procedures.
  • Executes approved orthopedic tasks such as applying plaster splints and other orthopedic devices.
  • Administers basic first aid and wound care, including irrigation, preparation, and dressing applications.
  • Observes patients and reports any significant changes in their condition to the appropriate team member.
  • Connects patients to monitoring devices and performs 12-lead ECGs, recognizing and responding to critical arrhythmias.
  • Effectively communicates with all caregivers regarding patient matters and equipment usage.
  • Engages compassionately with patients, families, and visitors, providing support for patient care and wellbeing.
  • Conducts specimen collection and clinical testing, including hemacues, istats, urine dips, and pregnancy tests, as well as blood glucose level checks using a glucometer.
  • Utilizes appropriate downtime forms and electronic medical records (EMR) to document relevant patient information accurately and concisely.
  • Receives and records laboratory and patient data reports, conveying information accurately to RN and LIP.
  • Performs phlebotomy following established protocols.
  • Ensures all required documentation is completed and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Monitors, orders, and restocks supplies and emergency equipment as necessary.
  • Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes, including transporting patients using wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • May perform administrative tasks such as answering phones, scanning, and copying to support patient volume as needed.
  • Facilitates patient education related to treatment plans, such as crutch walking instructions.
  • Safely monitors and transports patients to various units unless an RN is required for transport.
  • Participates as a team member in de-escalation techniques, application of restraints, and monitoring of restrained patients.
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Upon hire: Washington Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Certification
  • Upon hire: Washington Nursing Assistant Certification License or
  • Upon hire: Washington Nursing Assistant Registered
  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training in orthopedic technology is desirable.
  • Two years of EMT experience and/or two years in an Emergency Department setting.
