Job Overview

Position Summary

Blakemore Children's Center is in search of a dedicated and skilled Kitchen Manager. The Kitchen Manager will oversee all culinary operations within the center, ensuring the preparation of nutritious, appealing meals and snacks for both children and staff. Responsibilities include menu planning for the week, sourcing necessary food and supplies, and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment. The Kitchen Manager may also assist in supervising children during meal times or provide support in classrooms during emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Possess knowledge of USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program standards for children.
  • Design, display, and adhere to approved menus that comply with USDA/CACFP guidelines.
  • Document any food substitutions made on the menu.
  • Maintain accurate records of meal and snack counts as required by USDA/CACFP.
  • Conduct economical shopping for food and related supplies while keeping an accurate inventory.
  • Prepare and serve meals at safe temperatures and in suitable serving dishes.

  • Ensure that children under four years old do not receive certain foods such as hot dogs, whole grapes, nuts, popcorn, raw peas, hard pretzels, spoonfuls of peanut butter, or large chunks of raw carrots or meat.

Maintain proper storage for food, cooking supplies, equipment, utensils, and cleaning materials in accordance with local and state regulations.

  • Keep kitchen appliances, including the refrigerator, stove, and can opener, clean and in good working condition.
  • Regularly clean kitchen counters, shelves, and drawers.
  • Set tables for meals and snacks following proper etiquette.
  • Adhere to all center policies, local regulations, and NAEYC health, safety, and hygiene standards.
  • Dispose of trash and clean garbage cans regularly.
  • Wash and sanitize dishes and cookware using the dishwasher or approved sanitizing methods as required by health authorities.

  • Understand emergency protocols and procedures for various situations, including fire, tornado, hurricane, or chemical leaks.
  • Assist educators with food-related activities planned for children when requested.
  • Collaborate effectively with other staff members and demonstrate enthusiasm for the role.
  • Build and maintain a supportive relationship with families.
  • Engage in ongoing training to enhance knowledge of child development and food service.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in a childcare facility kitchen, commercial kitchen, or school cafeteria.

  • Knowledge of fundamental nutrition principles.
  • Proven ability to plan, shop, prepare, and serve balanced meals and snacks.
  • Experience with the USDA/CACFP Food Program is preferred.
  • Exhibit good personal hygiene practices.
  • Genuine interest in working with young children and a willingness to participate in training opportunities related to child development.
Compensation and Benefits

Includes one week of paid vacation, paid holidays, and school closures, along with five sick days. Work hours are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM, including a 30-minute paid break, making it ideal for parents with school-aged children.
