Position Title:

Academic Support Coordinator/Counselor

Overview:

Job Responsibilities:

50%
• Provide counseling and guidance to students in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) regarding academic, personal, financial, and career matters. Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students to support their academic journey. Assist with course selection and registration processes, and offer support for writing assignments as needed.
• Advise students on academic probation, ensuring they are aware of available resources and maintaining communication with faculty. Identify when additional support is necessary and oversee tutoring services.
• Organize and facilitate Academic Success workshops, evaluating their effectiveness and planning future initiatives.
• Train and supervise tutoring staff to enhance student support services.
• Coordinate formal and social activities for program participants.
• Oversee structured study sessions for students.

• Collect and analyze data related to student retention, attrition, and graduation rates.
• Manage the Academic Support Program throughout the academic year and during summer initiatives, collaborating with faculty to address student needs.
• Prepare reports for internal and state requirements, ensuring accurate tracking of support services and student outcomes.
• Publish newsletters to keep the HEOP community informed.
• Monitor student academic performance and request evaluations as necessary.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Program Director.

20%
• Identify and recruit prospective students for the HEOP, making informed admission decisions. Participate in outreach activities at high schools and college fairs.
• Assess program effectiveness through ongoing evaluations of student progress.
• Assist in organizing summer institute events and manage office supplies.
• Schedule appointments for program participants and handle financial reconciliations.

Education / Experience:


• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field is required.
• A minimum of two to three years of experience working with diverse populations is essential.
• Proven experience in designing and leading workshops and seminars.
• Familiarity with evaluations and research methodologies is preferred.
• Candidates with similar life experiences to those served will be considered favorably.
• Proficiency in computer applications is required.

Competencies / Skills:


• Strong self-direction and problem-solving abilities.
• Administrative experience in higher education or relevant sectors.
• Experience working with college students from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to effectively analyze program data and communicate findings.

Supervision of Employees:

Oversee all HEOP Student Tutors and related support staff.

Work Environment:

A well-lit and ventilated workspace conducive to productivity.

Equipment to be Used:


• Proficient use of MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access)
• Familiarity with data management systems and office equipment.
