Job Summary

Chamber Security Staff serve as the primary point of contact for entry onto the House Floor, ensuring controlled access and maintaining the security and integrity of the legislative process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Control access to the House Floor and Speaker's Lobby, verifying the credentials of authorized personnel.
  • Facilitate requests for Members from the Floor, providing assistance and support as needed.
  • Bring authenticated bills and official documents into the Chamber, ensuring their secure handling and storage.
  • Assist with the coordination of security and emergency protocols, including relaying emergency communications and directing Members to safe areas.
  • Provide access control for Member meetings and briefings, ensuring the security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Answer questions, provide training to new employees, and model good behavior, promoting a positive and professional work environment.
  • Support the House recovery operations structure, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the legislative process.
  • Perform other official duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to the success of the House Sergeant at Arms.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years old and possess a Bachelor's degree or have two or more years of relevant experience.
  • Previous Legislative Branch experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to complete and pass approved training courses required by the Office of the Sergeant at Arms.
  • Must be able to recognize Members of Congress and appropriate leadership staff, demonstrating a strong understanding of the legislative process.
  • Must be tactful and courteous in dealing with Members, staff, and the general public, maintaining a professional and respectful demeanor at all times.
  • Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time, working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure, displaying good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Must have refined people and communication skills, with the ability to develop strong working relationships with senior level staff, officials, and Members of Congress.
  • Must be able to work long hours with varying start and finish times, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
