Miriam's Kitchen is dedicated to eradicating chronic homelessness in Washington, DC. We promote permanent supportive housing as a sustainable solution while addressing immediate needs through nutritious meals and exceptional social services for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Specialist will manage a streamlined PSH caseload and offer essential programmatic assistance to frontline case managers in navigating the housing landscape. This includes evaluating housing applications and collaborating with the Housing Authority. The specialist will assist case managers and supervisors in advocating for intricate and escalated cases with landlords and the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA), ensuring meticulous maintenance of housing application records.

The PSH Specialist will deliver community-oriented support services to a primary caseload of up to 9 residents who have transitioned from chronic homelessness, with the potential to expand the caseload based on the Senior Director of Housing's guidance and staffing requirements. PSH Case Managers collaborate as a cohesive unit to facilitate the journey from homelessness to housing through the housing identification process, providing essential support services to help residents maintain stable housing and attain the highest level of self-sufficiency and quality of life.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Housing Specialist Duties
  • Serve as the primary contact and coordinator for submitting all necessary documentation for voucher applications, initial lease agreements, and relocations.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key external partners at DCHA and DHS.
  • Communicate updates on DCHA and DHS program policies and procedures to the Miriam's Kitchen Direct Service teams.
  • Conduct internal training sessions on the housing process and available resources across departments as needed.

  • PSH Case Manager Duties
  • Build trusting relationships with residents in Permanent Supportive Housing. Collaborate with residents to set goals and develop service plans addressing housing, mental health, substance abuse, health, education, income, and employment.
  • Provide tailored support services, including tenancy problem-solving, independent living skills training, connections to public benefits, employment assistance, financial management support, and access to medical, mental health, and substance abuse services.
  • Conduct outreach, case management, crisis intervention, advocacy, and other necessary services for residents, primarily in community settings and residents' homes.
  • Ensure compliance with monthly client contact requirements, including at least one home visit per month.
  • Support residents' wellness and independence.
  • Monitor residents' medical and mental health needs, facilitating referrals for additional support as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison with landlords and community stakeholders to enhance the success of residents and the PSH program.
  • Collaborate with other service providers to ensure residents receive high-quality, effective services tailored to their needs.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records, compile reports, and complete other program documentation while ensuring confidentiality of resident information.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for Miriam's Kitchen to enhance or adapt the PSH program to better serve residents.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, or related fields, along with one year of case management experience, or a master's degree in these disciplines. (Internships in related fields are considered valid experience.)
  • Passion for the Housing First approach.
  • Strong understanding of the housing process and related systems, particularly DCHA and housing providers.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse team.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong sense of professional boundaries.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a motor vehicle.
  • Commitment to ending chronic homelessness in Washington, DC.
  • Understanding of the structural and systemic causes of homelessness.
  • Ability to pass background checks as mandated by government contracts.
  • Comfortable working with a diverse population with varied backgrounds and experiences.
